Commission Requests, and other FAQs

Hey guys! I’m so so excited that all of you love the shoes I painted, and I’d love to paint shoes for all of you who ask, but I don’t have time right now because I am a full time college student, and school comes first. However, I will start taking commissions for shoes in May or June and continue all summer! I also will be working at TOMS shoes Style Your Sole events all over Southern California (links for those here here here) throughout the year.

I will do my best with your design request, but I’m not perfect, and I am still learning as an art student. But at TOMS events I’m really limited time wise, and with these commissions I can take all day if I felt like it, so it should turn out anyway :)

When you do request for a commission, here’s how it’ll work:

You’ll message me and I’ll be like yeahawesomelet’sdothis, and then you will send me a pair of canvas shoes you’d like to have painted. (Lighter color canvas will be better, but any color can be painted on.)

You tell me what you’d like to have painted, and I’ll name a price. Just as a general estimate right now, to have an entire shoe painted, it will cost approximately $40 or higher. To have just part of a shoe painted, it will cost about $35 and below.

I don’t really do too well with painting portraits of live people on shoes, so please don’t ask for me to paint Steve Buscemi or your mother on the shoes, unless you don’t mind a cartoony version. However, I could probably do this and this and this on shoes, sans all the gunky paint I use.

Then I’ll send it back to you and you wear them!

What kind of paint do you use, and how long will it stay?

I use acrylic paint, fabric paint pens, and occasionally dye, and then spray them with Scotch Guard so they’re extra waterproof. The paint should stay for a really long time.

I really really appreciate all the reblogs and likes from you guys, and all my new followers :) As the school year progresses, this blog will become kind of dormant, but I do update my personal blog much more often, and I’ll probably be posting some of my other work that isn’t shoes, like this painting and this one. Hi! I'm totally in love with those Doctor Who Van Gogh shoes. Like holy crap. I was wondering (if that was a commission,) how much that costed? And I was also wondering how well the paint stands against rain and general weathery things? Thanks so much! :)

I charged lower than I would have normally for them, at about $40 :) That’s because it was for a close friend and they finagled it out of me. Those I think would probably be about $55, maybe $60. They provided the shoes as well.

And as for keeping up in the rain, so far all of my shoes have worked okay! I use fabric paint pens, and acrylic paint which becomes plasticy when it’s completely dry, but I also mix it with a textile medium to make it bond better with the fabric. The shoes I paint is canvas as well, which helps it stay anyway since that’s what acrylics are meant for. When I’m finished painting them, I spray them with a few layers Scotch Guard, which waterproofs them quite nicely. I’ve worn I think all of my painted shoes in the rain at some point, and I wear them to Disneyland all the time so the paint should be pretty permanent :)

I work by commission, and I generally work with shoes you buy and send me. From there, I work with you on something doable in your price range :) Prices vary by amount of shoe covered, basically, as well as complexity of what you want. For example, the peacock shoes I painted would cost $15-20, and the Star Wars shoes would cost about $55-65, or higher. There is a large difference in the effort and time I put into both pairs. We can work out a middle ground that works for you as well.

I don’t always take commissions, because I am a college student and school comes first for me, so it may take a while for me to complete a pair of shoes, or to respond to a commission request. Summer and winter breaks are generally best times. I work first come first serve, so you could very well get put far back in line, unless there was a deadline of some sort. I’ll do my best to work out a time!
